HERIOTS
36, HAWICK 29
Hawick
travelled to Goldenacre with confidence after last
week's excellent display against Watsonians and again
the young side put in a very creditable performance and
were certainly not over awed by their bigger and more
experienced opponents.
Played in perfect conditions in front of a very sparse
crowd where Hawick's travelling support must have
equalled the home crowd, both sides played open rugby
with neither side able to break the opposing defence
until the 15th minute when Heriots broke away from their
own half to open the scoring with a try. Another
converted try by Heriots 3 minutes later gave the home
side a 12-0 lead. Hawick then took the game to Heriots
and Rory Hutton, who played a Captain's role and had an excellent
game at
stand off, scored 2 virtually identical tries to reach
half time 2 points behind at 12-10.
After the break Heriots had the better of the exchanges
and scored another 3 tries, with 2 being converted, to
take a handsome 31-10 lead. But all credit to Hawick,
especially the forwards with Matt Landels and Andy
Wilson showing their class, who never gave up and in the
final quarter had their best spell of the match. Barry
Sutherland side stepped his way through for a try
converted by Lowrie. Andy Wilson then broke away up the
touchline to score in the corner to pull the score back
to 31-22. Heriots then scored another try against the
run of play but again Hawick came back when young
replacement prop Gavin Cameron plunged over at the posts
but despite fighting right to the final whistle, Hawick
could'nt score the vital converted try to tie the
scores. Final score Heriots 36, Hawick 29 and 2 hard
fought bonus points to keep Hawick mid table in the
league
