EDINBURGH
ACCIES 12, HAWICK 13
Hawick were in Edinburgh for the second week in
succession, this week at Raeburn Place, and hoping to
build on last week's good performance at Goldenacre.
The large travelling support again outnumbered the
locals, witnessed a dour battle littered with mistakes
from both sides who failed to take advantage of the very
strong breeze, Accies in the first half and Hawick in
the second.
Accies started the stronger and had Hawick on the ropes
for the opening 15 minutes who again opted for the catch
and drive policy which worked to their advantage in the
previous encounter but with lesser effect this time.
Accies prop Marsh barged his way over for the opening
score to put the home side 5-0 up. This seemed to spur
Hawick into action who had their best spell of the match
for the next 20 minutes. The forwards kept the pressure
on and Accies did well to hold their line intact but
eventually Craig Neish managed to force his way over who
also slotted a good conversion. Accies replied with a
converted try to retake the lead at 12-7. Neish put over
a penalty to reach the interval at 12-10 behind but with
the strong elements in their favour to come.
Both sides produced numerous unforced errors in the
second half and seemed to get each other bogged down for
lengthy periods. Craig Neish put over another penalty to
give Hawick a slender 1 point advantage which was the
last score of the day. Matt Landels again received a
very dubious yellow card and with a man down, Hawick
held firm with the very young front row of Little,
Scammell and Linton sticking to their task particularly
well. Hawick defended well in the final 5 minutes to
reach the final whistle and a hard fought but
unimpressive win by 13 points to 12 which moves them up
to fifth place in the league.

ACADEMY 41, KELSO A 3
With their fifth Friday
night fixture of the season, long term injury victims
Lee Stewart and Zander Bruce returned to the squad
together with Quins stand off Chris Shand on the
bench. Playing towards the YM pitch, the Academy got off
to a good start when they stole a Kelso lineout and
following a break by M Graham no 8 K Davies scored in
the corner. Kelso replied almost at once, fencing the
home side to concede a penalty under the sticks, the
Kelso no 10 converted to trail 5-3. The young Hawick
squad were playing at a high rate, another break by M
Graham saw him score next to the posts, Armstrong
converting. This high tempo match had run Berwick off
their feet the previous week, but the Poynder Park men
matched them up front but the backs looked to have the
better of their opposite numbers. So it proved to be,
just on the interval when a break by N McColm was
supported by C Whillians, who when caught close to the
line passed inside to R Borthwick who ran in the try,
Armstrong added the extras for a 19-3 half time lead.
Early in the second half the no 10 added a penalty,
however he couldn't add the extras to Borthwick's second
try. This was Armstrong's last act off the match and was
replaced by Chris Shand. A try on the hour mark by M
Graham after a charge down and a run from the 10 metre
line which he converted himself for a 34-3 lead. A
final try was scored late in the game when B Campbell
dummied from a ruck deep in the Kelso 22 and ran under
the sticks, Shand added the extras to complete the
scoring, 41-3.
