Match report: 29th September
Ayr v Hawick

AYR 18, HAWICK 17
Millbrae is always a very difficult place to get any sort of result and today's visit by Hawick proved no different. Again the good travelling support all but equalled the home crowd and were hoping for more of the same of recent weeks.
Most of the opening exchanges were in the Ayr half but it was Ayr first to score with a penalty followed by a unconverted try by the Ayr prop. The match was then held up for 7 minutes due to the unfortunate serious leg injury to Ayr flanker Paul Burke. Play recommenced and it was Hawick next to score after 38 minutes when Barry Sutherland kicked ahead which was allowed to bounce by the Ayr defence, Stephen Anderson collects and scores, Craig Neish adding the conversion. Ayr slotted and easy penalty in front of the posts and it was in the 14th minute of injury time when former Hawick flanker Scott Forrest dived over from a scrum for a converted try and a half time lead of 18-7.
Hawick got off to the best possible start in the second half, Greg Goodfellow made a nice break and the ball was carried on by Andy Wilson and Matt Landels before Stephen Anderson was again on hand to score his second try of the afternoon which was again converted by Neish. With Hawick now having their best period of the match, Hawick pulled Ayr's lead back to 1 point with a Craig Neish penalty. Colin Murray was bundled into touch just short of the line and drop goal from Barry Sutherland hit the upright. Rory Hutton was all but over the line but an Ayr hand forced a knock on. Despite a heroic effort and again with all the team showing great commitment, the 1 point deficit remained and Hawick left Millbrae with a losing bonus point which moves them up to fourth place in the league

Team:- Neil Renwick, Stephen Anderson, Rory Hutton, Craig Neish, Colin Murray, Barry Sutherland, Greg Goodfellow, Nicky Little, Matt Landels, Sean Linton, Gavin Petrie, Michael Robertson, Nick McTaggart, Andy Wilson and Danny Landels.
Subs:- Kevin Reid, Brad Turnbull, David Lowrie, Rory Scott and Garry Douglas.

HAWICK ACADEMY 28, SELKIRK A 8
Having had a free week on the 22nd, the Academy returned to action on Friday night when Selkirk visited Mansfield Park. The Souters had given Hawick hard games over the last two seasons and this game was no different with the visitors taking an early lead with a well struck penalty by their standoff. Trailing for the first time this season, the young Greens took the game to the visitors but they kept losing the greasy ball in contact, a situation mirrored by Selkirk.  However a penalty by Ross Armstrong after 20 minutes tied the score and a fine 45 metre effort on the half hour mark by Armstrong gave Hawick a 6-3 lead.  This was short lived following a break from a scrum by one time YM scrum half Fraser Jack saw the visitors flanker take the ball at speed and race to the corner for an unconverted try and a half time 8-6 lead.
Turning to play towards the YM the Academy started to put some sustained pressure on the visitors, although it was a surprise when they took the lead in the 51st minute when following a driving maul the forwards went over the line but the Selkirk touch judge had his flag up only to be overruled by the referee and Zander Bruce being credited with the try, Armstrong couldn't convert, his touch line effort hitting the post. The no.10 added that number of points in as many minutes through a penalty and conversion of his own try for a 21-8 lead. A last minute try by veteran Wattie Davies sealed the win but praise must go to the stuffy visitors, who like Hawick had to re shuffle their side through injury several times during the match. This Friday sees Jedforest A visit Mansfield Park, so why not come down and see the Academy in action.
