HAWICK
31, CURRIE 27
As like a fortnight past against GHA, this was not a
match for the faint hearted. Perhaps even more so in
this match because Hawick didn't start playing until the
last 15 minutes of normal time. Up until then, Hawick
looked down and out at 24-3 behind, having conceded
simple mistakes and turnovers all afternoon. Whatever
was said or done at this point saw Hawick play some of
the best rugby witnessed at Mansfield Park for a long
time. The senior players in the side, particularly the
Landels brothers and Man of the Match Andy Wilson who
seems to get better with each game, completely outplayed
the opposition who were all but dead on their feet at
the final whistle. The level of fitness and will to win
shown by all the team in the these final minutes surely
augers well for the rest of the season. A mention must
be made about the Hawick scrum that never looked in any
trouble against the visitors much bigger and more
powerful opponents and regularly drove Currie back.
It was Hawick who started well and were first to score
with a Craig Neish penalty but from then it was all
Currie who notched a converted try and a penalty to
reach the interval 10 points to 3 in the lead.
The second half started as the first half finished with
Currie making the most of the Hawick errors. Two
converted tries, one a breakaway effort from well inside
the Hawick half saw Currie with, what should have been,
a match winning lead of 24-3 with only 13 minutes left.
It was at this point that the tables completely turned
and Hawick started the fight back. From the moment that
Danny Landels scored his first try, converted by Neish,
the crowd sensed Hawick were in with a shout and got
right behind the team. Neil Renwick finished of a fine
break by Andy Wilson again converted by Neish and when
captain Rory Hutton intercepted and ran from halfway to
score at the posts to tie the scores the win looked very
much in sight. But it was Currie with a rare foray into
the Hawick half who looked like taking the spoils with a
penalty to retake a 27-24 lead with the match into
injury time. Hawick again worked their way up to the
Currie posts and with the referee signalling a penalty,
a draw was assured but the forwards kept picking and
driving, the Currie defence eventually gave way and
Danny Landles drove over to seal a remarkable bonus
point win which moves Hawick up to third place in the
league.

HAWICK
ACADEMY 27, JEDFOREST A 10
Two
late tries gave the Academy a bonus point win under the
lights at Mansfield Park on Friday night over a stuffy
Jedforest team. The home side were penalised in the
opening minutes but the Jed kicker pulled his kick well
wide. A break by scrum half Young saw him brought down
short forcing the visitors to concede a penalty which
Neil McColm kicked for a 3-0 lead. This quickly became
8-0 when a fine handling move was finished of by skipper
Neil Douglas. With the return of Craig Charters from
injury, the home side had a jumper to aim for and his
Scotland u19 experience helped the scrum get the better
of the Jed eight, however the men from Riverside as is
their want, were highly competitive in the loose,
winning several turnovers to keep the homeside at bay.
Despite their strong defence, they could not prevent a
second Academy try when after good interplay between
backs and forwards, a final drive by Garry Douglas
supported well by Callum Whillians whose pass saw Ross
Borthwick score, McColm added the extas for a 15-0
interval lead.
A much changed home team emerged for the second half, it
seemed this tactic was going to be costly when the
Jed winger scored twice in 15 minutes of the re start.
Leading by 5 points the home side got some breathing
space when M Graham followed up his own chip ahead to
re-gather and run in unopposed from the 22, McColm added
the conversion with 5 minutes left. With little time
left, Neil Douglas kept up the tradition of a veteran
scoring the teams last try and gain the bonus point for
a 27-10 final score.
Next up for the academy is a trip to Peebles on
Friday......nothing to do next Friday night.......jump
in the car and make your way to Peebles and support the
future stars of Hawick rugby.
