BOROUGHMUIR 40, HAWICK 20
Following the euphoria of last weeks final quarter
comeback against Currie, Hawick visited Meggatland
hoping to carry on where they left off but Boroughmuir
laid out their stall in the opening minutes and it was
clear to the again excellent travelling support, that
this was going to be a much tougher match than in
previous weeks against a team who must be one of the
favourites to lift the league title. Hawick were minus
Landels and Little in the front row but even so, would
still have had their work cut out had they been able to
field a full strength side. Hawick's cause was not
helped by some very slack tackling and basic errors,
particularly in the first half, which allowed
Boroughmuir to score some very soft tries.
Boroughmuir scored three tries and a penalty, two of
them in the opening minutes, before Hawick scored their
only points of the first half with a Craig Neish
penalty. Another breakaway converted try gave the home
side a convincing 23-3 lead at the interval.
Another penalty by Neish and some more determined play
from Hawick gave thoughts of another comeback but this
was all to no avail as Boroughmuir scored another couple
of tries to put them out of site at 35-6. To Hawick's
credit they never gave in and managed to contain the
Boroughmuir attacks. A try which was started and
finished by Andy Wilson took the score to 35-13 but
Boroughmuir hit back with another try. Hawick again
rallied in the closing stages and when Kevin Reid was
impeded when he would have scored, the referee awarded a
penalty try converted by Neish and Boroughmuir finished
convincing winners by 40 points to 20 which would have
been much more had they had a reliable goal kicker.

HAWICK
ACADEMY 25 PEEBLES A 3
Friday
night saw the Academy start a run of games with the
three sides immediately below them in the league table
with a visit to The Gytes at Peebles. The lighter Hawick
Pack Knew they have to work hard to keep the home
forwards at bay and so it proved the case after the
visitors got off to a flyer. In the 5th minute, fullback
N McColm got on the end of a quick handling move to
score in the left hand corner. 5 minutes later the same
player was again to the fore as the Hawick side added a
second try, fielding a kick deep inside his own half,
skipper Neil Douglas got off his zimmer and took off
like a bat out of hell before passing to young McColm,
just as it looked like he was going to be forced into
touch he under handed a pass inside to Keith Davies who
ran in for a great team score. On the half hour mark,
the home side got on the scoreboard with a penalty from
their fullback which was cancelled out by a David Lowrie
effort for a half time lead of 13-3.
The second half followed a similar pattern as the first
with defences on top until late in the game. The young
Greens pinned the Tweedsiders into their own 22 for a
sustained spell of pressure. Knowing they needed a score
for the losing bonus point, Peebles started to take
chances and this was fatal for them. Firstly, in the
35th minute they dropped a pass which was kicked through
by Hawick, Ross Gibson was first to arrive and touch
down, Lowrie adding the extras. Two minutes later,
Peebles again tried to open up from deep inside their
own half, when a long missed pass by the stand off went
to ground for Ross Armstrong to pick up and score to
collect the bonus point and record a 25-3 victory.
Next game is a home match against Melrose on Saturday.
