HAWICK 25, DUNDEE HSFP 12
Hawick entered this match knowing that from past
experience, Dundee are always a very difficult team to
beat either at home or away and a win was essential to
remain in a prominent position in the
league following last weeks
disappointing defeat at Glasgow Hawks. The match erupted
in the second half with a mass brawl which saw Danny
Landels and Dymock from Dundee red carded, the tempers
flared up again on numerous occasions in the second half
which was not helped by some dubious decisions by the
match officials. Hawick were reduced to 13 men
when Matt Landels was yellow carded which earns him a
one match ban under the totting up procedure. Along with
all the injuries, this leaves Hawick with major
selection problems next week and beyond.
Hawick started the match well and had the most of the
play in the first half, with the forwards keeping their
opponents very much on the back foot. The lineout
certainly was much better than in recent weeks and the
strong front row of Fleetwood, Landels and Cross had the
better of their opposite numbers. Craig Neish put the
first points on the board with a well struck penalty and
Matt Landels was driven over the line in the corner for
a try, which Neish converted well from far out. Another
Neish penalty gave Hawick a 13-0 lead at half time.
The second half again seen Hawick continue their
dominant play and man of the match Andy Wilson again
scored at the posts which gave Hawick a healthy 20-0
lead. Geoff Cross barged his way over for a unconverted
try to increase the lead to 25-0. From this point the
tempers boiled over at regular intervals and with Hawick
reeduced to 13 men, Dundee got themselves into the match
with 2 tries and a upset was on the cards and strong
Hawick defence was called for to keep Dundee out. Hawick
weathered the storm and were unlucky not to score the
bonus point try when Robertson was tackled just inches
short of the line. The match ended to the relief of the
Hawick supporters with a hard fought 25-12 win but with
the added selection difficulties in the coming weeks.
