HAWICK 22, HERIOTS 31
Heriots travelled to Mansfield Park and completed
the double over Hawick this season. In a match that was
always going to be affected by the strong wind blowing
towards Denholm, Hawick should feel agrieved not to get
at least a losing bonus point for their efforts.
Heriots' backs were always dangerous on the break and
this proved to be the match winner for the visitors.
Hawick got off to the best possible start with a penalty
from Craig Neish in the opening minute. Heriots stormed
back with a converted try from Teague but Hawick used
the elements to their advantage and kept Heriots in
their half of the pitch for lengthy periods. Craig Neish
slotted another couple of penalties to retake the lead
at 9-7. With Hawick now threatening the Heriots line,
Barry Sutherland pounced on a Heriots defensive mistake
to score at the posts, converted by Neish for a 16-7
lead. Heriots worked their way up towards the Hawick
line and scored an unconverted try through Goldie.
Another two Craig Neish penalties gave Hawick 22-12 lead
at the interval but with the prospect of having to face
the elements for the next forty minutes.
Hawick did manage to hold Heriots with some solid
defence and indeed did threaten the Heriots line at
times but Heriots, who continued to look dangerous on
the break, broke the Hawick defence with two tries, one
converted, to retake the lead at 24-22. With Hawick
again getting very few favours from the referee, the
final five minutes were a very tense affair but Hawick
were unable to turn the match around. Heriots sealed
their 31-22 victory with a late converted try at the
posts.
