HAWICK 20, EDINBURGH ACCIES 12
After two dissappointing defeats in a row, Hawick
got their campaign back on track with a convincing win
over old rivals Edinburgh Accies at Mansfield Park. As
last week, this was again a game of two halves with the
strong breeze blowing towards Denholm and Hawick again
played with the wind in the first half. In the backs,
Man of the match, Rory Hutton, played a Captain's role
at stand off with a fine display and Barry Sutherland
made some telling breaks from fullback. The forwards
were more than a match for their opponents, with a very
solid scrum and the lineout working to good effect. As
ever, Andy Wilson was popping up everywhere and all his
hard work earned him two good touchdowns.
With the strong breeze in their favour in the first
half, Hawick failed to take real advantage and most of
the play was in midfield. Criag Neish slotted a first
minute penalty and another in 28 minutes to reach
halftime with a slender 6-0 lead and with the prospect
of facing the elements for the next forty minutes.
Hawick started the second half with much more purpose
and the forwards took control and kept the game tight
with some excellent driving play and ball retension.
With Accies reduced to 14 men, Hawick took full
advantage. A fine Craig Neish break ended with Andy
Wilson's first try and four minutes later from a five
metre scrum, the flanker drove over for his second, both
were well converted by Neish to give Hawick a
comfortable 20-0 lead going into the last quarter.
Accies finished the stronger and scored two late
consolation tries but Hawick were certainly the better
team on the day and recorded a well deserved win by 20
points to 12.
