SELKIRK
8, HAWICK 25
Hawick won their first away match since the narrow
victory against Edinburgh Accies away back on the 15th
September. Selkirk, who are lying in second position in
Premier 2 and have not lost at Philiphaugh since the 1st
September, proved to be very creditable opponents and
made a near full strength Hawick team fight all all the
way for their victory.
Craig Neish slotted two early penalties to give Hawick a
6-0 lead. Hawick had had most of the pressure and this
eventually paid off when Simon Fleetwood forced his way
over for a try near the posts which was converted by
Neish for a 13-0 lead. This was proving to be a typical
Border derby with opponents having differences of
opinion from time to time but the referee was showing
much common sense and opted for having words with the
players rather then sending them from the field. Nick
Mctaggart then broke from a ruck and showed great
strength and pace to score a try despite the attention
of the Selkirk defence. Selkirk finally got on the
scoreboard with a try by their scrum half just before
the interval and a half time score of 18-5 for the
visitors.
The second half saw Selkirk make more a game of it and
had Hawick on the ropes for lengthy periods but all they
could show for their efforts was a penalty and a score
of 18-8 going into the final 10 minutes. The Hawick pack
had now taken control and the pressure finally told when
Bruce Campbell took a quick tap penalty and fed Gary
Douglas who crashed over for Hawick's third try, again
converted by Craig Neish for a deserved win by 25 points
to 8.
