MORAY 3,
HAWICK 47
This season's National Cup campaign got under way
for Hawick with the long trip up to Elgin to face Moray,
who thankfully defeated Orkney last week and saved
Hawick from the huge financial burden which the match
would have incurred. Hawick set off at 6am in two
minibuses and despite the hard overnight frost which had
put a question mark over whether the pitch would be
playable, the match finally got the green light.
After the long journey and finding it difficult to get
going, Hawick were on the defensive for the first ten
minutes and conceded three penalties, the third being
converted to give the home side an early lead. Hawick
were now finding their feet and Michael Robertson who
was the star player on show, drove over from a quick tap
penalty, converted by Craig Neish. Five minutes later,
from a move started in their own half and with numerous
players involved, Sean Linton touched down for another
converted try. As the match progresses, the home pack
are finding the going tough and the backs are running
the ball at every opportunity but Hawick couldn't
increase their lead at halftime, Moray 3, Hawick 14.
Five minutes into the second half, John Coutts who is
making his first outing since returning from Australia,
started a move which was finished off by Ross Gibson and
again converted by Neish. It was Michael Robertson who
was again on the scoresheet five minutes later who broke
through to score in the corner which was again well
converted. Hawick's experience and superior fitness was
now beginning to tell and John Coutts again provided the
scoring pass to Michael Graham with Craig Neish keeping
his 100% record intact with another well struck
conversion. In the final five minutes, Sean Linton and
John Coutts both scored tries, the final one converted
by David Lowrie for a final score of Moray 3, Hawick 47
who now progress into the fifth round of the Cup.
