DUMFRIES 10, HAWICK 34
Hawick and a large travelling support made the trip
to Park Farm in Dumfries for this fifth round tie in the
National Cup and the Dumfries men made Hawick fight all
the way for victory which was not really assured until
the last quarter of the match.
The home side, particulary the pack, started the
stronger, shouted on by the good local support, and
deserved to take an early lead with a penalty after ten
minutes. Hawick fought back and five minutes later, a
Neil Renwick pass saw Colin Murray beat his man to
score, converted by Craig Neish. Three minutes later,
the same combimation set up a try for Fred Stevenson,
again converted by Neish to extend their lead to 14-3.
Just before the interval, Dumfries were awarded for all
their hard work with a deserved converted try who remain
very much in the hunt at 14-10.
Again it is the home pack who are causing Hawick
problems and only desperate defence prevent Dumfries
from taking the lead. Hawick weather the storm and
Dumfries are now having to defend. John Coutts darts
over for a converted try after 55 minutes. Hawick
are down to fourteen men after Colin Murray is yellow
carded following a dust up on the touchline. Neil
Renwick again takes the play to Dumfries who offloads to
Steven Anderson to dive over in the corner. With the
match into the final ten minutes, the Hawick backs cut
loose which results in two good tries, the first from
Lee Armstrong who strolled in from thirty metres and the
second from Neil Renwick, converted again by Craig Neish
for a final score and a hard fought win by 38 points to
10 and a place in the sixth round of the National Cup.
