HAWICK 29, STIRLING COUNTY 17
A good size crowd gathered at Mansfield Park for the
first home game since the 19th January in anticipation
of witnessing Hawick secure the win that would secure
their Premiership status for next season and come full
time the players, committee and supporters celebrated,
knowing that top league rugby will be at Mansfield Park
for another year following a good win over Stirling
County. All the team played with the commitment and
skill required to overturn the drubbing received at
Bridgehaugh earlier in the season.
The match was just two minutes old when Craig Neish
slotted a penalty following a dangerous tackle. Stirling
drew level with a long range penalty two minutes later.
Another penalty by the visitors put Stirling 6-3 in
front after ten minutes. Hawick came more into the match
with the forwards and backs combining well and Ryan Hogg
crashed over for a try after an inside pass from Craig
Charters which was well converted By Neish from the
touchline. Steven Anderson extended Hawick's lead with a
well taken try when he latched onto a scoring pass from
Colin Murray after half an hour’s play. Three minutes
before the interval, Stirling reduces Hawick's lead with
another penalty and a halftime score of Hawick 22,
Stirling 9.
More of the same from Hawick was needed for the next
forty minutes and three minutes later the match was all
but won when Steven Anderson crossed for his second try
of the afternoon when he finished off a good break from
John Coutts. Neil Renwick slotted the conversion.
Stirling is now throwing everything at Hawick but the
home defence holds firm. Hawick were now on the hunt for
the bonus point win and not to disappoint, man of the
match Geoff Cross secures the five points with a good
try, again converted by Renwick. Two minutes from time,
Stirling cross for a consolation try but Hawick ran out
worthy winners by 29 points to 17. With top flight rugby
now guaranteed for next season, everybody can now look
forward to the all Border quarter final of the Cup with
Melrose in two weeks time.
