WATSONIANS 55,
HAWICK 6
Hawick travelled to Myreside for their final match
in this seasons league campaign
to face Watsonians, hoping to build on last weeks good
display against Stirling County and consolidate their
mid table position. With a number of seasoned
campaigners being rested, presumably before next weeks
big Cup match against Melrose, the very young side were
always going find it tough going against a much bigger
and quicker Watsonians team.
Hawick were playing with the strong breeze in the first
half and indeed held their own for much of the half but
the Watsonians backs always looked dangerous with ball
in hand. Hawick scored first through a David Lowrie
penalty. The home side replied with a try shortly
afterwards. Another Lowrie penalty again gave the
visitors the lead but this proved to be the last points
of the day for Hawick. Watsonians crossed for another
two tries before the break. Hawick were certainly not
out of it at 6-17 but a huge effort was going to be
required in the second half against the elements.
Although Watsonians scored six tries without reply in
the second half, the young Hawick side, to their credit,
never gave up and indeed had their moments, with Geoff
Cross again showing his class with some storming breaks.
But in the end, the speed of the home backs coupled with
the power of their forwards proved too much for Hawick
and Watsonains emerged deserved winners by 55 points to
6. |
