HAWICK 17, MELROSE 34
Hawick crashed out of the Scottish Hydro Electric
Cup to a very good Melrose team. The physical presence
and experience of the visitors proved to be too much to
handle for the young Greens side. The biggest crowd of
the season gathered at Mansfield Park to witness this
much anticipated Border Derby and along with the Saxhorn
Band who regularly burst into tune with well known
Common Riding tunes this was not enough to lift the
Hawick team to victory.
Hawick got off to the best possible start with what must
be try of the season. Steven Anderson was fed the ball
on the halfway line, he beat two defenders before
rounding the fullback for a great solo try which was
converted by David Lowrie. Sadly, despite a lot of
effort, this was Hawick's only score of the first half
and Melrose went on to score three converted tries and a
penalty to reach halftime with a healthy 24 -5 lead.
A big effort was going to be required by Hawick for the
next forty minutes and as in the first half, Hawick
Player of the match, Steven Anderson scored a converted
try when he finished off a move started by Colin Murray
and Rory Hutton to give Hawick hope with a score of
12-24. Another penalty and a converted try from Melrose
put the visitors out of sight at 34-12. To Hawick's
credit they kept plugging away and were rewarded with a
try in the corner from Michael Robertson made by a break
from Ross Borthwick. A great break from his own 22 by
Rory Hutton saw Ross Borthwick bundled into touch just
short of the line but referee Changelang blew for full
time and Melrose emerged deserved winners by 34 points
to 17.
