Hawick arrived at
Netherdale for this RBS Border Regional Cup fixture
following slightly improved performances in recent weeks
but knowing this match against high flying Gala would
give a good indication of just how much improvement new
coach Phil Leck had made. The normally perfect playing
surface at Netherdale was dusted with a covering of icy
snow which made for difficult handling conditions from
both sides.
Gala had Hawick on the
ropes for a majority of the first half, the visitors
making very few visits into Gala territory in the
opening twenty minutes. Gala scored the solitary try of
the match through Palapoi with the rest of their points
coming from the boot of Lee Miller. Hawick had their
moments and perhaps on another day the referee would
have awarded tries for their efforts but on this
occasion it was not to be.
In the second half
Hawick certainly had more of the play but the
combination of icy ball and cold fingers made handling
very difficult. The only scoring of again came from a
Miller penalty.
In the end a deserved
win for Gala and another unconvincing display from
Hawick who still have much work to do ahead of the
resumption of the Leagues in mid January. |
