With membership to the
play off league long been assured, this match with
fellow member Glasgow Hawks would give a good indication
of where Hawick stood in what will be a very difficult
task to avoid the dreaded drop to Premier 2. A moral
boosting victory would undoubtedly give Hawick a much
needed lift going into the break from League action
until mid January.
Gary Johnstone got
Hawick off to a good start after ten minutes with a
simple penalty attempt from in front of the posts but
from this point most of the play was in the Hawick half
of the pitch. Hawks had the home defence working
overtime and this pressure paid dividends with two
converted tries and two penalties for a half time lead
of 20 points to 3.
After the break Hawick
played with much more aggression and commitment. This
saw them have much of the play but were unable to turn
this advantage into points. A good try by John Coutts
gave Hawick a glimmer of hope at 20-8 but sadly numerous
dropped passes and unforced errors were again Hawick's
downfall. A late penalty sealed a deserved Hawks win at
23 points to 8.
This result confirmed
Hawick's bottom place in Premier 1 on only seven points,
with only a drawn match against Stirling County to their
credit. With the new coach still to be appointed,
whoever takes over has a huge task on their hands to
raise moral going into the play off league on the 14th
January. |
