Match report: 7th January

Haddington v Hawick

HADDINGTON 7, HAWICK 38
With the resumption of this Seasons's League campaign staring next Saturday, it was important to continue good form shown in the Jedforest match and hit the ground running when Stewarts Melville visit Mansfield Park on the 14th January. A visit to Haddington is never easy as was shown in Hawick's previous visit when a last gasp try gave Hawick victory.

On a very cold afternoon, Hawick were playing with the very strong breeze in their favour in the first half but it was Haddington who were out the blocks the quickest with a converted try under the posts in the opening minutes. This spurred the Hawick team into action and Haddington were rarely now out of their own half of the pitch. Michael Robertson burst away to score Hawick's opening try which Neil Renwick converted. Liam Lawrence then finished off with a try in the corner following good play by both backs and forwards, Renwick again converting from far out. It was all Hawick at this stage and Greg Cottrell strolled in under the posts for another converted try which gave the visitors a healthy 21 points to 7 lead at the interval but with the elements to face in the second half.

Haddington had the territorial advantage in the opening spell of the second half but were unable to break down a very solid and well organised Hawick defence. With the home side now tiring it was Hawick who kept the ball in hand and gave Haddington all maner of problems. A good try by Graham Hogg was followed shortly afterwards by another by Bruce McNeil which put Hawick out of site at 31-7. With time now running out a final flourish by Hawick  saw Nick Mctaggart split a very tired Haddington defence to score under the posts which Renwick again converted. Final score Haddington 7, Hawick 38.

A comfortable win for Hawick in the end with Shawn Muir having an excellent match at prop and in the loose. All thoughts now turn to next Saturday when it is vital to carry on this winning streak and get off to the best possible start with a win against Stewarts Melville.
