BILL McLAREN TRIBUTE EVENING

Murrayfield Stadium is playing host to a star studded tribute evening for Bill McLaren whose family, together with Scottish Rugby, extend a warm invitation to everyone involved in the game and in particular to valued members of the Scottish rugby community, such as you, who put so much into the game that Bill loved.

The gates will be open from 5pm, on Thursday 11 March, two nights before the Calcutta Cup match against England. Those wishing to attend are encouraged to arrive early and take their seats as the evening will start at 6.30pm sharp.

Free commemorative programmes will be available. The evening tribute, at Bill's "second home" will see the likes of Scotland's cap centurion Chris Paterson, Welsh wizard wing Gerald Davies, and other rugby greats and well-wishers attending from all over the world to celebrate and give thanks for the Hawick legend's genius.

The evening will see a large stage erected on the running track in front of the West Stand, with big screens showing pictures and specially-created match footage accompanied by some of Bill's most evocative commentary.

There will also be musical accompaniment from a Welsh male voice choir and Scottish Pipe Bands.

BBC presenter Dougie Donnelly will be the host for the evening, and he will also welcome tributes from former British and Irish Lions captains Gavin Hastings (Scotland) and Bill Beaumont (England) amongst others.

We very much hope that you can join us on Thursday and encourage you to forward this invitation to as many rugby enthusiasts as possible, to ensure they don't miss this wonderful opportunity to pay tribute to the "Voice of Rugby".

The 2010 event, to be held on 15 May is over the same route, and supports two Charities, Poppy Scotland and Hearts and Balls. More details here

THE HAWICK LEGACY FACTS

Legacies are a vital source of income for many of the country’s best-known charities and we would like to suggest you consider making a bequest in your will in favour of Hawick Rugby Football Club. The club is, of course, also a charity and our official charity number is CASC02009. Whether your legacy is large or small it will make a real and lasting difference to the club, to rugby in Hawick, and the preservation and development of Teri values and heritage.

Leaving a legacy could also save on inheritance tax – this is a complex subject your solicitor will be able to advise you on. The benefit is that the hard-earned money you have worked for all through your life will benefit people in Hawick rather than the tax man.

You can either leave a fixed sum (known as a pecuniary legacy), or part of your estate once all your other gifts have been distributed (known as a residuary legacy). Once you have considered your family and friends, leaving just 5% of your estate to Hawick Rugby Football Club would be of enormous value and your generosity will provide a lasting legacy for the club.

It’s easy. If you already have a will all you have to do is to draw up and insert a codicil making the Hawick Rugby Football Club, Mansfield Park, Hawick, TD9 8AW, (Charity Number: CASC02009) a beneficiary, stating whether it is a pecuniary or residuary legacy and the sum or amount involved. If you do not already have a will we would respectfully suggest you consider drawing one up, whether or not you make a bequest to the Club, as this makes life considerably easier for those you leave behind.

We would suggest you inform your solicitor, accountant or other professional advisor of your wishes and they will be able to advise you. If you do not have a professional advisor Bannerman Burke, as sponsors of Hawick RFC, would be happy to advise you.

As you know running a rugby club is an increasingly expensive enterprise, and with the economic climate making life even more difficult, we sincerely hope you will consider making a Hawick Legacy. This is a generous and constructive way to make a lasting contribution to a community institution that plays such an important role in the lives of the people of Hawick.
