BORDER WHITE RIBBON CAMPAIGN
White Ribbon Scotland is a campaign to involve men in
tackling violence against women. It is a
joint initiative by a coalition of organisations,
individuals and groups of men around Scotland. Part of
the international White Ribbon Campaign, which is the
largest effort in the world of men working to end
violence against women, with campaigns in over 55
countries.
White Ribbon Scotland contributes to ending violence
against women by engaging men and boys in taking action
on the issue. We do this by raising awareness, promoting
discussion and providing information and resources to
support personal and collective action among men.
White Ribbon is part of the Scottish Borders Violence
Against Women Partnership (VAW) and its long term
educational role to promote gender equality.

SPECTATOR QUESTIONNAIRE
A ‘root and branch’ review into rugby in
Hawick is being carried out. Former Greens skipper Brian
Renwick, who is facilitating the review, has already met
with coaches and presidents from various clubs over the
last month and a questionnaire has been circulated to
garnish opinions.
Now he is appealing to rugby fans to have their say by
adding their views to the questionnaires. “I was
approached by Alister Pow and Michael Aitken to do
a review of the game, and only agreed to do it on the
condition that action be taken on the recommendations,
which was agreed. There needs to be change but it’s
about who’s responsible and how we can make it happen.
Rugby in Hawick lends itself to being very strong on the
one hand but also very fragile because there are seven
different committees, meeting in different rooms and all
discussing different things." Renwick stressed “This
isn’t my review. This is about everybody involved in
Hawick having a chance to make recommendations for
change and I’m pulling it all together.”Although the YM
are flying high in National Division One and the Quins
are on a good run, the Greens are fighting for their
Premier One lives and the Linden continue to struggle
for numbers – a problem also affecting semi-junior sides
the PSA and Wanderers.
The review will cover playing, coaching, facilities,
governance and the playing pathway for players of rugby
in Hawick and Mr Renwick stressed it will be driven by
the town’s rugby fraternity. And while a previous rugby
meeting back in 2009 failed to make any progress, he is
confident this review can have a major impact. He said:
“There’s lots of things coming out and the initial
feedback from coaches and presidents is there’s a real
need for change. One of the questions is, are you happy
with the state of rugby in Hawick and every one said no
so that in itself suggests that something needs to be
done.”
Copies of the questionnaire can be picked
up from the Hawick News office and returned to Brian
Renwick at Heart of Hawick, Kirkstyle, Hawick TD9 0AE.

THE HAWICK
LEGACY FACTS
Legacies are a
vital source of income for many of the country’s
best-known charities and we would like to suggest you
consider making a bequest in your will in favour of
Hawick Rugby Football Club. The club is, of course, also
a charity and our official charity number is CASC02009.
Whether your legacy is large or small it will make a
real and lasting difference to the club, to rugby in
Hawick, and the preservation and development of Teri
values and heritage.
Leaving a
legacy could also save on inheritance tax – this is a
complex subject your solicitor will be able to advise
you on. The benefit is that the hard-earned money you
have worked for all through your life will benefit
people in Hawick rather than the tax man.
You can either
leave a fixed sum (known as a pecuniary legacy), or part
of your estate once all your other gifts have been
distributed (known as a residuary legacy). Once you have
considered your family and friends, leaving just 5% of
your estate to Hawick Rugby Football Club would be of
enormous value and your generosity will provide a
lasting legacy for the club.
It’s easy. If
you already have a will all you have to do is to draw up
and insert a codicil making the Hawick Rugby Football
Club, Mansfield Park, Hawick, TD9 8AW, (Charity Number:
CASC02009) a beneficiary, stating whether it is a
pecuniary or residuary legacy and the sum or amount
involved. If you do not already have a will we would
respectfully suggest you consider drawing one up,
whether or not you make a bequest to the Club, as this
makes life considerably easier for those you leave
behind.
We would
suggest you inform your solicitor, accountant or other
professional advisor of your wishes and they will be
able to advise you. If you do not have a professional
advisor Bannerman Burke, as sponsors of Hawick RFC,
would be happy to advise you.
As you know
running a rugby club is an increasingly expensive
enterprise, and with the economic climate making life
even more difficult, we sincerely hope you will consider
making a Hawick Legacy. This is a generous and
constructive way to make a lasting contribution to a
community institution that plays such an important role
in the lives of the people of Hawick.
